Trip to Wichita Falls

As many of you know... I went to an RA convension in Wichita Falls, Texas. We were very excited to go!! To actually get out off the valley... and all paid by the school... is there anything better? Well our trip was very long... about 13 hours because we stoped to eat at Austin and restroom breaks and all that. We ate at the Spagetti Warehouse in Austin. Very Good Food! We got are the Holiday Inn at 3 am. We went straight to bed... which by the way are the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. Anyways we had to be up by 9 am if we wanted breakfast.. but we decided to skip that and we woke up at 11am. We then went to go eat... it was better Olive Garden and Chinese buffet... and ofcourse we chose the buffet! hehehe Well we get there... nothing but white people. I have never seen so many white people in one place before. So they give us this table that is FAR away from the actual dining place... there is a wall in between... speaking of segregation. So we are there and of course I hang out with Asia (she is black)... Lynda (hispanic but looks very white) and it was me (how more mexican can I get). So people are looking at us weird. So anyways the food was GREAT. Even thought they practically asked us to pick it up out back. hehehehe (The racism is killing me inside).... Well we go to Target and to Toys R Us to find some hats that we had to wear for the event. Of course Target is exactly the same as in the valley exept it is comepletly quiet... no mexicans fighting for things that are on sale or asking for help... noting but white people, complete silence, and us. Ofcourse once we were there there was no more silence... we even pratice a little salsa- merengue. hehehe We went back to the hotel... and decide that we were going to a Casino in Oklahoma... OMG... I went to another state in the US!!! So we go and it is nothing like we thought it was... there are only slot machines... well needless to say we were still very excited... I lost $15! We go back to the hotel and get ready for Roll Call... we were so nerves... we were like the only university not prepared for it but we made some stuff up on the way to the casino and decided to do that. We were one of the last ones to do the roll call.. we were so nervous... we actually... it was all me... everyone was just standing behind me... for "moral support". I will right what I did fro the rool call in another block. So EVERYONE STOOD UP WHEN I FINISHED!!! They Loved it! I was so releaved. Then we went to 4 workshops. Everything was cool until we went to one that was called "fear o' bag".. it was about fears that RA's have... This IGNORANT white girl's qestion was about security about the dorms she worked it... she said... "I live in some dorms that are not actualy IN the university... they are like... across the street... and we live around "Non English Speaking People" (she did " " with her fingers) and i am afraid of even going to my classes or to go to the cafeteria because every time I cross the street the yell things at me... and they stop the traffic and everything (she was not even hot).. and I like don't know what to do because it can be dangerous." I was like HELL NO!!! I tried to stay calm. One girl form another university adviced her to have an activity teaching self defence. Which I thought was a good idea to her "problem". The white chick then replies... "I dont think we should do that... we are in North Texas... we don't need self defense." OOOOOOOOOHHHHH that did it for me... I had to reply in a good manner because after all I was representing UTPA... So I just said to her... "I think that the self-defense idea was really good you should take it into consideration... you can make it fun... and about it being North Texas... you can still need self-defence classes... after all no matter if it is North or South Texas ... there is bound to be a ghetto everywhere." She just looked at me and turned around... but I had all the minorities... black and mexican people looking at me like THANK YOU!! I met a lot of people... after the workshops we had dinner and had a dance. I also rode the mechanical bull ... 53 SECOND BABY!!! I learned some new steps from a Jamaican guy that was there and other people that were there dancing. The dance ended aroung 12:45am. We went back to the hotel... Lynda and I talked for a while and then we went to see what the rest of the people were doing. We stayed talkind to some really cool people from Angelo State University until like 4am. We had to be up at 9 to pack and leave. On our way back we stopped at Cracket Barrel... it is were all the white people go to eat... and ofcource us mexicans and a black girl. hehehehe. They had a GIANT disclamer... to make it clear that they welcomed EVERYONE... it was right at the entrance. It was so funny. As we are eating... it is now Asia (black girl), Mike (white guy), Lynda (looked white), and me (mexican). Everyone was looking at us weird again... but I had to admit we LOVED the attention... Mike was all like " they look like the want to call me to the back and ask me... what do you think you are doing with does people boy." hehehe... and Asia smile at this white old lady and the lady just stared at her...so Asia stared at her back really hardcore. I was just laughing... like I always do in any given situation. I had experienced racism. The waitress even asked us who was going to pay in a descreat way... "it is going ot be all together or in seperate checks"... and this is before we ordered our food. hehehehehe... well what can I say... WHITE PEOPLE ARE ASSHOLES!! hehehe JK. not all.. only the majority. well.. I got home safe. I can't wait to go back to experience some more of that racisim. I am planning to return soon. Watch out North Texas... the Ghetto is coming to you! hehehehe...
hope you guys missed me...
peace love and happiness.

Alejandra
